A Weekend Apartment With a Dramatic, Green Tiled Fireplace in the Mountains
Located in a new building in the Jizera Mountains in the Czech Republic, this 83-square-meter (just under 900 square feet) apartment is all thanks to Markéta Bromová architekti. Used as a weekend retreat, the apartment is entered from the second floor with stairs that lead down to the ground floor space. The layout is broken into the public areas with the kitchen, dining room, and living room, and then the private section which includes three bedrooms side-by-side down the hallway. Once inside, it’s clear that the three-sided fireplace is the focal point of the entire apartment with its wrapped green tile exterior.
To the side of the fireplace is a U-shaped, built-in sofa with light grey cushions, ideal for warming up after being outside in the cold. A Flos 265 light juts off the wall, making a statement while providing light when needed. Dark wood boards on the ceiling offer a warm juxtaposition against the matte concrete floors.
The large family can easily fit around the rectangular dining table with its built-in bench on one side and row of chairs on the other. The wood ceiling continues into the dining room and kitchen, matching the dining bench and kitchen cabinets.
When you hear 900 square feet and big family, you have to wonder where they sleep. These built-in bunk beds do the job while offering some privacy with slatted wood panels as dividers.
In the third bedroom, two beds are elevated on a platform with separate ladders to reach them. Underneath there’s a sofa bed for additional sleeping options.
